From June to August 2022, large parts of Europe and North Africa were affected by extreme heatwaves. These prolonged periods of intense heat caused severe drought and triggered thousands of wildfires, especially in France, Greece, Germany, Czech Republic and the United Kingdom.
One of the most challenging and severe fires occurred in Bohemian Switzerland National Park in the Czech Republic. Hundreds of firefighters and helicopters from Germany, Poland, Slovakia and Sweden were mobilized. Hytrans mobile water transport systems played a crucial role in supplying water to both ground crews and air operations.
Difficult access to water
In this remote region, water had to be transported over a distance of nearly 10 kilometres, using high-capacity hose that also had to bridge significant elevation differences in the landscape.
Due to these height differences, it was essential that the water reached its destination with enough pressure and flow to remain effective. Hytrans systems ensured this by delivering continuous high-volume output, even across long distances and steep terrain.
More efficient aerial support due to mobile water supply
To support aerial firefighting, water was pumped into large buffer basins. Helicopters collected water from these basins, greatly reducing flight time and increasing operational efficiency. Without the mobile water transport units, fast and effective wildfire suppression in these inaccessible areas would have been nearly impossible.
