After months of drought, the Emilia-Romagna region in northern Italy was hit by extreme rainfall in May 2023. The amount of rain that normally falls over seven months fell within just two weeks. In some locations, nearly half the annual rainfall came down in just 36 hours, leading to the overflow of 23 rivers, 400 landslides, and flooding in 43 cities and towns — including Bologna, Cesena, Forlì, Faenza, Ravenna, and Rimini.
Widespread infrastructure damage, flooded roads, and power outages made rescue operations highly challenging. To support the local fire brigades, civil defence units from Belgium and Slovakia deployed four Hytrans FloodModules, providing a combined capacity of 200,000 litres per minute.
Mobility and flexibility is key
The high-volume pumping systems played a key role in reducing water levels in both urban and rural areas. Their mobility and fast setup allowed emergency teams to operate effectively, even in difficult-to-access areas.
