In the early summer of 2022 Germany faced intense forest fires. More than 2400 incidents were reported throughout Germany. Particularly the federal state of Brandenburg. By mid August, the number of forest fires here was three times as high than in all of 2021. In total of over 850 hectares was destroyed!
The fires were intensified by extreme drought and strong winds. Additionally, the presence of old ammunition in the soil caused several fires to escalate or reignite, further increasing the number and intensity of wildfires in the Brandenburg region.
More than 300 firefighters and firefighting helicopters were deployed. But one of the biggest challenges was the supply of enough water. Two Hytrans mobile units from fire brigades from different federal states were deployed for 7 days in a row, pumping a total of 4.5 million liters of water. The hoses reached water supply distances of over 4000 meters and bridging height differences of 110 meters.
Thanks to the high capacity and long hose reach, the Hytrans units enabled water to be transported from distant sources — even in areas inaccessible for standard equipment. But, every wildfire is different, and fast, flexible deployment of the right equipment is essential. In this case the mobile system was efficiently used to supply the firefighting vehicles and water tankers with enough water. Only after 53 hours the fires was under control.
Across Germany, more than 70 Hytrans units are in service. Now, the Hytrans units are part of the official wildfire response strategy in Brandenburg.
